Yes, today is Valentine’s Day, in case you had not noticed.
Unlike some of our more modern days, like Mother’s Day or Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this day has a long history, dating back to A.D. 496, when Pope Saint Gelasius named the day.
The English took up the day early on, and Shakespeare mentioned it. The practice of drawing women’s names from a jar was an English custom, and where the term “wearing your heart on your sleeve” originated. The woman whose name was drawn became the winner’s Valentine.
The day is great for greeting cards and candy. You may notice a page in today’s issue devoted to Valentines. So here’s to LOVE.
