Washington seizes derelict ship at Port Ludlow

Friday, January 4, 2013

PORT LUDLOW, Wash. (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources has seized a derelict ship that has been docked since October at Port Ludlow, north of the Hood Canal bridge.

Regional aquatics manager Dennis Clark says department officials are meeting Friday to decide where to tow the 180-foot long ship so it can be scrapped. He says it will be somewhere on Puget Sound.

Clark says the ship is just a hulk with engines removed and no fuel on board.

He says the state stepped in Thursday after the owner, George Marincin of VicMar Inc. of Tacoma, was unable to carry out plans to tow the ship to Mexico to be scrapped.

Clark says it will be scrapped in Washington in an environmentally sound manner.
