Wild post back-to-back shutouts over Fresno
Saturday, January 12, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. — Going into the weekend, coach Bliss Littler wasn’t quite sure what to expect from his team.
The Wild (26-5-3 overall) made a tough decision in trading away Blake Roubos — one of the team’s leading scorers — early last week in an effort to strengthen center play. Littler knew there was a chance dealing Roubos would disrupt team chemistry, but it was a risk he was willing to take.
So far, it seems to be working. Wenatchee finished off a road trip at Fresno (10-19-5 overall) with a 5-0 win Saturday, its second shutout in as many games.
“You get on the bus and you travel 18 hours by bus, anytime you do that, I don’t care, it’s tough,” Littler said. “It’s tough to travel that far, and we had two good efforts, so I was happy with the way our guys responded.”
The NAHL West-leading Wild got the win Saturday with backup goal keeper Nick Schmidt, who finished the night with 21 saves.
Offensively, the goals flowed early, with Trace Redmong scoring first, followed by two scores from Chris Kerr.
Max McHugh and Evan Schmidbauer both recorded goals in the third period.
Wenatchee 3, Fresno 0 (Friday)
Stout goaltending kept the Wild afloat during the first period, the shots fell in the second period and the end result was a 3-0 road win Friday against a streaking Fresno Monsters squad.
It was a picture-perfect performance for a team that had lost consecutive home games coming into Friday.
“There wasn’t anything I wasn’t happy with,” coach Bliss Littler said.
Wenatchee wasted no time attacking and put up 11 shots in the first period, but couldn’t get past Fresno’s Tomas Sholl.
By the same accord, Fresno threatened the Wild defense in several instances early on, but veteran goalie Robert Nichols came up with a number of plays in the net to keep the Monsters scoreless.
“He made the big save when he had to to keep us in the game when it was 0-0,” coach Bliss Littler said of Nichols, who recorded his seventh shutout of the season. “And once we were up, he didn’t let them back in.”
Wenatchee kept attacking and got results in the second period.
Forward Joe Sullivan, who the Wild acquired in a trade earlier this week, scored the team’s first goal 13 minutes into the period. He wasted no time establishing his presence in the rink.
“He was probably the best player on the ice tonight,” Littler said. “He hit everything that moved and won face-offs.”
Defender Chris Jones scored the second goal about two minutes after Sullivan and Max McHugh got the final goal of the night with less than three minutes left in the second period.
