Tuesday, January 22, 2013
AmeriCorps volunteer Shelly Forster, right, watches as Carol Swager shows her a knitting technique. In the background also knitting are Felicia Barr, left, and Lucy Young. The Wenatchee Diversity Advisory Committee and Intermountain AmeriCorps teamed up to adopt The Hat Project and host a knit-a-thon during a day of service for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday. The event, held at the Brethren Baptist Church in Wenatchee drew about 90 knitters and crocheters making hats and scarves for area youth.

It would have been nice if you had run these stories yesterday on the National Holiday honoring Dr. King. Also, I noticed you ignored mentioning the Inauguration of the President of the United States. Maybe you'll run it next week along with a short article on how Mitt Romney lost the election for President. Late news is better than no news I guess. I think Dr. King's holiday is a wonderful occasion to introduce young people to the many accomplishments he made in the times of such cruel racism. The possible subjects for uplifting discussion are endless. Maybe next year your acknowledgement of this important holiday will be more timely. I hope so.

Thank you Wenatchee World for the front page coverage (1/22/13) of the commuity-based Knit-a-thon held at the Brethren Baptist Church in Wenatchee on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. AmeriCorps and hatmakers of The Hat Project : old/young, light/dark, women/men, tall/short, wheelchair/walkers/canes --many cultures joined to knit/crochet/loom hats for children who need them. A common language of respect and connectedness was spoken and new friendships were made. It was a special day. For more information and/or to participate please call AmeriCorps (662-6156), The Hat Project (888-1953) and/or Diversity Council of Wenatchee (888-6200). Thank you!
