WENATCHEE — A Malaga man accused of keeping roosters for cockfighting pleaded down Monday to a gross misdemeanor and was sentenced to 10 days in jail.
Leonard Vaca Amezcua, 27, was charged last June with felony animal fighting after police investigated reports of cocaine trafficking by his brother Miguel, 38, who was suspected of selling nearly 60 grams of cocaine to a confidential informant in fall 2011.
A February police search of Leonardo’s Malaga home, where Miguel resided, found three caged roosters. Their combs and wattles had been removed and two of them had their spurs blunted — alterations commonly seen on a rooster cultivated for fighting, animal control officers said.
But Leonardo said while the chickens were used for animal fighting, they belonged to Miguel, who could not be found. On Monday, prosecutors reduced the charge against Leonardo to second-degree animal cruelty, a gross misdemeanor, that accused Leonardo Vaca Amezcua of negligence that caused the animals “unnecessary or unjustifiable physical pain.” The roosters were confiscated and euthanized.
Chelan County Superior Court Judge T.W. "Chip" Small allowed Leonardo Vaca Amezcua to serve out his jail term on work release or weekends. Miguel Vaca Amezcua is still wanted on a warrant charging him with two counts of cocaine sales.
