Don was born on August 24, 1928, in Seattle, WA to J.D. Leslie Erskine and Effie Erskine. The family moved to Wenatchee in October of that year to make their final move and raise their 11 children. Don joined the U.S. Navy on August 31, 1945. He served four years before being honorably discharged on August 23, 1949. Returning to Wenatchee, he became an accomplished Mixologist working for the then Elks Club, Cascadian Hotel, Columbia Hotel and the Chieftain Lounge. He married Thelma Erskine on July 2, 1963 in Boise, ID. Don spent 26 years as a volunteer firefighter for Chelan County Fire District # 1. He started his own business with his wife, Thelma. They opened Don’s Greenhouse in 1964. Together, they spent 32 years operating the greenhouse, side by side. They enjoyed working with all the plants they loved so much! Don also enjoyed working with their daughters and his mother-in-law in the greenhouse! Don was a member of The First United Methodist Church. He attended Whitman Grade School, HB Ellison Junior High and Wenatchee High School, graduating with the class of 1947. Don loved baseball and coached Little League and Legion Ball.
Don is survived by his wife, Thelma Erskine of their home in Wenatchee. Daughter, Vienne Terri L Bennett (Kevin) of Wenatchee; son, Daniel Erskine (Paula) of Marysville, WA; daughter, Karen Erskine (Chris) of Portland, OR; daughter, Kellie Mayer (Doug) of Wenatchee; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell, Garr, and Paul Erskine; and one sister, Dixie Vickery. He was preceded in death by mother, Effie Erskine Craft; father, J.D. Leslie Erskine; brothers, Stan, Dave, and Jack Erskine; sisters, Juanita Warren, Evelyn Kinzebach and Le Joy Gere.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, at Wenatchee City Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Jones & Jones-Betts Memorial Chapel. Memorial Donations may be made to American Diabetes Association.
