YAKIMA — A big jump in jobs amid Grant County’s data centers sparked a drop in the county’s May unemployment rate to 8.6 percent, the 32nd straight month of improvement or no change.
In a report released Monday by the state Employment Security Department, the county’s jobless rate in May fell 0.5 percent from the 9.1 percent posted during the same month last year.
Information services, or data centers, led all sectors with a jump of 23.1 percent (240 jobs) over May 2012. Transportation and utilities showed a 3.8 percent rise (210 jobs).
The 32-month stretch of year-over-year improvements in the Grant County jobless rate began in October 2010.
