TWISP — Six smokejumpers supported by a helicopter dropping water are fighting a 2-acre fire burning in the Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness, southwest of Twisp.
Ignited by a lightning storm that passed through the area Sunday, the fire is burning in steep terrain near the south fork of War Creek, about 15 miles southwest of Twisp.
The smokejumpers responded Tuesday, after the fire was spotted during a reconnaissance flight..
It is called the Sun Mountain Fire, but has no relation to Sun Mountain Lodge, a popular resort outside of Winthrop, said Forest Service spokeswoman Shannon O’Brien. The resort is not even close to the fire, she said.
Another flight to look for more new fires is scheduled for this afternoon.
