My wife bumped into Dr. Jerry Gibbons this week, driving an Alfa Romeo Spyder convertible that he has been driving since 1974.
He got it from the late Dr. Don Haug, who got a new sports car every other year. Gibbons, a surgeon, joined Wenatchee Valley Clinic 50 years ago this month.
Haug was known for bragging about his cars, so Jerry and the late Bob Kintner, an anesthesiologist, decided to test Haug. They secretly started adding a little fuel to Haug’s car, and sure enough, he bragged that a special oil he bought was responsible.
Then they reversed, and started siphoning a bit out daily. Haug quit talking about his great gas mileage, and the two conspirators never told him!
Haug was one of the three physicians who started the clinic, along with Drs. Smith and Mares.
