TWISP — A portion of the Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness is closed due to a wildfire burning in the War Creek area.
Gusty winds caused the Sun Mountain Fire to grow to 35 acres on Thursday while firefighters on the ground pulled back to a safe location, the U.S. Forest Service reported late Friday morning.
Once the winds settled, firefighters reengaged in their firefighting efforts. Six smokejumpers and a Forest Service crew of 10 are fighting the fire with the aid of helicopter water drops.
The closure begins at the confluence of War Creek and the south for of War Creek, and extends southwest along Black Ridge to Sun Mountain, then along the Chelan Crest from Sun Mountain to Battle Mountain, and northeast along Snowshoe Ridge to the Wilderness boundary.
The fire is nowhere near Sun Mountain Lodge, a popular resort near Winthrop.
