WENATCHEE — Wenatchee Police this morning arrested a 20-year-old man suspected of throwing a Molotov cocktail and starting a fire at 504 Methow Street last Saturday.
Robert E. Wheeler, Wenatchee, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson and unlawful possession of a firearm and booked into the Chelan County Regional Justice Center.
Wenatchee Police Officer John Matney said authorities believe the arson was gang related. He said Wheeler had been assaulted by someone associated with the residence earlier in the day.
No one was home when the fire erupted in the single-story residence. It was reported at 6:30 a.m., and burned the northwest corner and most of the attic.
Matney said he doesn’t have a dollar amount in damages.
“He had been a suspect from the time of the arson,” Matney said. “We were just trying to locate him, and we finally did.”
He said Wheeler had a handgun when he was arrested early today, and is not old enough to own one.
He said the investigation is continuing.
