J. LaVerne (Prewitt) Gettmann

March 27, 1924 ~ July 13, 2013

LaVerne was born on March 27, 1924, in Wenatchee and raised in the Methow Valley. She graduated from Twisp High School in May of 1941. After attending Business College, she was employed in the accounting department at Boeing in Seattle during WWII. During this time, she met her husband, Floyde R. Gettmann of Wenatchee. They were married on April 2, 1944. After the War was over, they moved back to Wenatchee and bought a house on the corner of Springwater and Pershing, as well as some orchard property. Both of them worked regular jobs and developed the house and orchards after hours and on the weekends. Their daughter, Gail LaVerne, was born on October 3, 1951. Their son, Jeffrey Allen, was born on January 7, 1955. In 1960, they moved the family to the Columbia Basin and started a larger orchard. In 1963, LaVerne went to work with Peoples National Bank. They were divorced on June 12, 1972. Neither party remarried. Floyde died on April 25, 1993. LaVerne continued to work with Peoples and then U.S. Bank, moving to the Seattle area in 1974. LaVerne retired in 1993, at the age of 69, and settled in a condominium in the Juanita Beach area of Kirkland, two miles from the home of her son, Jeff. She moved back to Wenatchee at the start of 2009, to live in the Bonaventure senior community with her only sister, Mary Ellen Long. She passed away on July 13, 2013, from the long term effects of Vascular Dementia.

She is survived by her sister; her two children; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
