WENATCHEE — A Red Cross shelter set up here since Saturday for Colockum Tarps Fire evacuees will remain open until evacuation warnings are withdrawn from the burned areas.
The shelter at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 508 N. Western Ave., has provided a sleeping area, showers, meals and updates on the fire to victims in need of a temporary place to rest for an hour or night.
Four members of a family from the scorched Tarpiscan Canyon area were the first evacuees to seek emergency relief at the shelter Saturday. By Monday afternoon, they had returned home to find everything safe and intact, said Marriah Thornock, executive director of the Apple Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The shelter is prepared to accept more residents if the need arises, she said. When fire danger subsides, Red Cross officials will enter the burned areas to assess how they can further help burned-out residents.
