How come pop singers sound so perfect, pitch-wise?
They are using new software that corrects their pitch, that’s how. It’s called “auto-tune” and there are two brand names that make them, writes John Kehe in the current Christian Science Monitor Weekly.
The hip-hop world uses it aggressively, he says, although there is controversy about its use in music circles. But even performers of country music are using it live. There is a somewhat robotic sound to the vocals, Kehe writes. Getting the right pitch takes a lot of vocal training when you are only relying on yourself.
We’ll ask our special vocal teacher Leslie McEwen if she’d like an auto-tune to get her students on pitch.
