Wrong on GMOs
Tracy Warner’s editorial of June 5, “GMO labels and wheat,” leaves many misconceptions.
First, there is no legal commercialized genetically modified organism (GMO) wheat grown anywhere in the world. GMOs are not traditional plant breeding. GMO crops contain genes from other species (viruses and bacterias) blasted into the crop genome with gene guns so that the crops can be soaked in pesticides. We will be eating these pesticides.
Second, the foreign customers are thus rational in rejecting GMOs. The FDA has not vouched for the safety of these crops. Per the FDA’s consultation letter to Monsanto in July 2004 concerning Monsanto’s experimental GMO Roundup ready wheat, it merely says that safety is Monsanto’s responsibility, not the FDA’s.
Third, passing Initiative 522 will greatly help our foreign markets. Japan and South Korea are already GMO labeling countries. Passage of I-522 will show solidarity with them. I-522 will impose labeling, and segregation throughout the entire supply chain and help satisfy our foreign market’s zero tolerance for GMOs when, and if, a commercialized GMO wheat is introduced.
Finally, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine has found causation of harm from GMO foods and urges doctors to warn their patients against eating GMO foods. See www.aaemonline.org. Vote yes on I-522 for health and jobs.
