Cougar kills dog, knocks owner to the ground in Manson

Friday, March 1, 2013

MANSON — A woman was knocked down by a cougar early this morning in a residential area along Lake Chelan in Manson.

The woman, in her 60s, suffered scratches and required stitches, said Capt. Chris Anderson with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The woman had let her small dog out of the house in a well-developed residential area about 2:30 a.m. when the cougar attacked the dog, Anderson said. The woman tried to get the cougar to drop the dog and blocked the cougar’s exit from an enclosed area of the yard. But the cougar then knocked the woman down and ran and hid behind a hot tub.

A Chelan County sheriff’s deputy arrived about 20 minutes later and shot and killed the cougar, Anderson said. The dog was killed by the cougar.

The cougar “was an old, emaciated male — nothing but skin and bones,” Anderson said. “It was in very, very poor health and was on its last legs.”

He said a necropsy will be done on the cougar today to determine if the cat was suffering from anything other than acute hunger. The woman’s name was not available. The attack happened in the 700 block of Manson Boulevard, according to RiverCom dispatchers.

Welcome to one of the new ways of the "progressive"(ignorant and regressive) west side. The invasive (non-native) wolves will be worse.

It is about time that we on this side of the mountains begin to stand up for ourselves---or better still---capture all of the wolves and cougars and transport them to inner-city Seattle. Remember, Obama's philosophy---everyone needs to share equally. Maybe we should even ship a few to Obama's back yard.

Gray wolves are native to Washington. Cattle and livestock are a non native invasive species. Please get over it. Gray wolves are here to stay and they will continue managing the elk and deer populations year round.

The woman must have loved her dog but what she did was very stupid. She could have been killed by the cougar by blocking its exit.

Hey Mike, why don't you let a couple wolves play with your pets for an evening. I agree with you Lorraine, ship a whole pack to Obama's home town too. They would help lower the crime rate at the same time. Ther strict gun control policies do nothing to prevent crime.

You're trying to be funny? You're not doing a real good job at it. Wolves are in Washington to stay. Get over it.

The cougar “was an old, emaciated male — nothing but skin and bones,” Anderson said. “It was in very, very poor health and was on its last legs.” I doubt it could have done anything more that what it did to the lady. It was scared, hungry and just wanted off the walled in porch. It didn't want to attack the lady, just was in fight or flight mode and it wanted flight. It is a shame that it was killed.
