There is no doubt about it — the Brewster Bears are the best Class 1A girls basketball team in Washington state.
The Bears claimed the state title with a resounding 72-41 victory Saturday over the previously undefeated Castle Rock Rockets at the Yakima SunDome.
Star 6-foot guard Chandler Smith was a one-woman show for Brewster, leading the team with 26 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, four steals and zero turnovers. She opened the game with a 3-pointer, scored 22 in the first half alone, and took the tournament MVP award.
Becky Mae Taylor added 13 points, four assists and four rebounds for the Bears, while Monica Landdeck had 12 points and five rebounds.
Brewster (28-1) never trailed, and it pushed its lead into the 20s early in the second quarter.
Castle Rock was led by Maddi Seidl (18 points, nine rebounds).
The championship is the Bears’ fourth in program history — all since 2000 — and first since 2003.
