Doug Head is grand marshal of the 2013 Stemilt Growers Grand Parade.
Doug is retiring in August as regional director for Children’s Home Society, a position he’s filled for 29 years. Apple Blossom Festival leaders announced his selection as grand marshal at the 12th Annual Sweetheart Luncheon for Kids on April 17. He was also honored at the All Service Club Luncheon on Wednesday.
“We are pleased to honor this great man as he approaches 30 years of service to children and their families in North Central Washington,” said festival director general Daryl Ferguson.
Doug came to Wenatchee in 1984 after 10 years working with troubled youth in residential programs in the Seattle area.
In retirement, he and wife, Lyn, hope to travel.
They also want to continue helping children from Afghanistan, where Doug worked for the Peace Corps right out of college.
He served in Afghanistan from 1967 to 1970.
He and his wife have had Afghan teenagers in their home for four of the past seven years. They are currently sponsoring an Afghan student who attends Wenatchee Valley College.
