LEAVENWORTH — Authorities say a 37-year-old rock climber who died Tuesday in a fall near the base of Snow Creek Wall southeast of Leavenworth was trying to avoid a rock that was coming at her.
Amy R. Stein — whose age was incorrect in initial reports — was initially from Boston, Mass., but had been living in Squamish, B.C.
Stein and four other rock climbers had descended the Orbit route on the Snow Creek Wall Tuesday afternoon, and were hiking down from the base when a large rock broke free above Stein, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said.
She was in a narrow ravine, and moved to avoid the rock, stepping off the ledge and accidently falling 70 to 100 feet, a news release said.
One of the climbers hiked out for help while another attempted to revive her, but failed, the sheriff’s office reported.
She was pronounced dead as rescuers arrived on the scene. Her family was notified, and her body was recovered by a sheriff’s office helicopter this morning.
