WENATCHEE — No hikes in electricity rates are on tap in the Chelan County PUD’s $227.7 million draft budget for 2014, but increases for sewer, water and fiber rates appear likely.
Commissioners hosted their first hearing Monday on the 2014 budget, which includes an 8.6-percent, year-over-year increase in operating expenses to $132.2 million, a 22.6-percent increase in capital costs to $51.4 million, and a bottom line $81.9 million in the black.
The 2014 budget anticipates rate increases of 6 percent for PUD water customers, 9 percent for sewer customers and 5 percent for the private companies that use the PUD’s fiber-optic network to sell Internet, telephone and cable TV services. These service providers usually pass PUD increases onto their own customers.
Meetings and hearings on these rate increases are planned for February. Commissioners could alter, based on community feedback, the increases proposed by staff. See tomorrow’s paper and website for a complete budget story.
