Sleeping Lady Resort sits on the site of the former Camp Field, a youth camp run by the Catholic Church for many years, acquired from the Yakima Diocese by Harriet Bullitt.
She related the long negotiation that took place for its purchase after the camp had closed.
The property had originally belonged to Leavenworth banker R. B. Field, for whom the camp was named, and rumor had it that R. B.’s daughter, living in Leavenworth, was unhappy about the sale, because he had donated it to the church.
The Catholic bishop did meet with her, and the sale took place.
Harriett said she checked on that rumor, and found he had sold it to the church for $50,000.
R.B. was a true banker, after all.
