Berniece A. (Tritle) Ferrel
December 11, 1923 ~ November 11, 2013
Berniece A. (Tritle) Ferrel, 89, a former Leavenworth resident, peacefully slipped into an endless sleep on Monday, November 11, 2013 at Riverwest Assisted Living in Wenatchee. She had been battling COPD for many years. She was born December 11, 1923 at Kadoka, SD to Frederick and Clarissa Tritle. At age 12, she moved with her family to Washington, arriving at Dryden on April 15, 1934, a date she regularly celebrated as a holiday. Berniece graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1941 and married Charles Ferrel, Sr. in 1946. They made their home on Ash Street in Leavenworth, where they raised three sons, Charles, Jr, (Chuckie), Dennis and Robert. Over the years, Berniece worked at several local merchants including Shelton’s Cafe, Carmody’s Market, Schultz’s Market, the Ski Tavern and for her sister, LaVerne Peterson at the Edelweiss Hotel.
Berniece was an avid pinochle and cribbage player, golfer and bowler, who for many years bowled in two leagues a week. Bowling was her favorite and she had well over 200 trophies and awards to show for it. Dust collectors, as she called them. She was known by the locals for her brilliant white sheets that she hung with pride on the front porch to dry. Her favorite pastime was ironing, which she did with a passion and was indeed a perfectionist. She had a very friendly and outgoing personality and made many friends over the years.
Berniece is survived by her youngest brother, Vernon (Dorla) Tritle of Dryden; sons, Chuck, Jr. (DeVona) of Redmond, Dennis (Sadie) of Wenatchee and Robert (Tess) of Leavenworth; three grandchildren, Kamron, Alexis and Trina, all of Wenatchee; one step grandson, Darrin Brown, and one step-great-grandson, Gabe Brown both of Renton; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
