When Wenatchee settlers formed the Pioneer Water Users Association (Pioneer) in 1896, they dug ditches and used gravity to move water from the Wenatchee to their orchards and crops — a state -of-the-art technology in the late 19th century.

More than a century later, Pioneer, true to its name, is leading the way in irrigation innovation in the Upper Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, celebrating the first season of a high-tech water delivery system that — with the flick of a new pumphouse switch — has brought water delivery into the 21st century while furthering the recovery of threatened spring Chinook, steelhead and bull trout in the Wenatchee River.
