EPHRATA — An inmate in the Grant County Jail was being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after she fell about 20 feet from a second-tier railing in the jail onto a concrete floor.
The fall came during an apparent attempt to hang herself about 3:20 p.m. Monday, Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones said in a press release.
Tina I. Mandelas, 47, of Moses Lake, was in serious condition in intensive care at the Seattle trauma center Tuesday afternoon.
Jones said jail video show Mandelas tied one end of a jail-issued jumpsuit to the second-tier railing. As another inmate rushed to her aid, Mandelas threw herself over the railing and fell to the floor below.
She was treated at Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata, then was flown to Harborview where she underwent surgery Tuesday morning, according to the press release. Mandelas had been in jail since Saturday when she was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, Jones said.
