Chelan’s Mahogany & Merlot revs up for a fourth run

The fourth annual Mahogany & Merlot returns to Lake Chelan this weekend with a schedule full of free activities, including a boat show, unlimited hydroplane races and a classic car show. All the action is centered on Don Morse Park in Chelan.

CHELAN — It’s full speed ahead for the return of the beautiful vintage boats! Mahogany & Merlot on Lake Chelan is back with the excitement and thunder of unlimited hydroplanes from years past.

Also, featured will be APBA Vintage Limited Class hydroplane raceboats, ranging from 15-feet to 20-feet long, with beautifully restored mahogany decks. The unlimited and inboard hydroplanes will run in exhibition heats.

And if that is not cool enough, Lakeshore Marina at Don Morse Park will host an in-the-water boat show featuring more than 35 antique and classic pleasure boats — some dating as far back as the 1920s — built by Chris Craft, Gar Wood, Hacker, Yandt and Century. These boats, all flawlessly restored, range in length from 16 feet to 33 feet in length.

And new for this year’s weekend are pre-1956 classic cars and Woody’s from the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Classic Car Club of America. All these cars are restored to their original condition.

And to make this event complete, the marina parking lot overlooking the docks will feature food at the Kiwanis booth, a wine and beer garden presented by Vin Du Lac Winery and featuring Tsillan Cellars, Tunnel Hill Winery, Blue Spirits Distillery and Mac & Jack Ales — all with the best lake view of all the action. The Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum Store will be there along with vendors with antiques, wine barrel decor, event shirts and other things to see and buy.
