ROCK ISLAND — The playground at Rock Island Elementary School was closed this morning as authorities searched for two suspects in a residential burglary in the area.
The school remained open.
Douglas County deputies received a call for help at 4:50 a.m. today from a person living in the 1500 block of Center Street, which is across the street from Rock Island Elementary School. The caller said residents heard a noise in their garage, went to investigate and found two men in the garage, said Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal.
Two men living in the house chased the suspects east on Center Street, Gjesdal said. Within about a block, a fight broke out between the two residents and the two suspects.
One of the residents suffered what Gjesdal called non-life-threatening stab wounds to the top of his head and his neck. He was being treated this morning at Central Washington Hospital.
The two suspects ran off across the school playground and disappeared, Gjesdal said. Descriptions of the suspects were not yet available this morning.
