Planed, sanded, awarded: Autumn Doucet’s years of dedicated wood crafts paid off last month with a major award from the hobbyist magazine Popular Woodworking.
The Wenatchee woman’s entry in the Popular Woodworking Excellence Awards — a cherrywood-veneer chest with ebony and mother-of-pearl inlay— earned the grand prize, netting Doucet a free trip to the Woodworking America convention in 2014.
Doucet’s had a zeal for woodworking for years, and went all-out on this project. Aside from working the figured cherry veneers over the chest’s maple body, she cut all of the mother-of-pearl by hand, made the bandings of ebony, holly and cherry, and crafted a hidden brass lock into the center of the flower design.
Face of a finalist: Lloyd Palm of East Wenatchee was a top 10 finalist in AARP’s “Faces of 50+” nationwide modeling search.
Palm, 75, is owner of Lloyd L. Palm Construction and Ram Ridge Gravel Sales.
Palm said his girlfriend, Judi Moreo, encouraged him to enter. He was chosen from among more than 6,000 people.
He got his first taste of modeling by having professional photographs taken of himself at Kirby Billingsley Hydro Park. He sent one of the them to the AARP folks, along with an essay.
Palm was surprised to make the top 10, but as it turns out, he really enjoys modeling.
“I got into that. I just loved it,” he said recently. “It sparks that hidden thing within ourselves when we try something new.”
New Holland news: Patricia “Patty” Paulus, a hay and cherry farmer from Palisades, recently earned the grand prize award at the conclusion of a six-month national promotion sponsored by New Holland and its parts and service division. New Holland sells and services a line of agricultural equipment including a full line of tractors, hay and forage equipment, harvesting, crop production and material-handling equipment.
Paulus won a 2013 New Holland Rustler 115 utility vehicle.
The national campaign encouraged customers to schedule service maintenance inspections and use genuine New Holland parts to prepare their equipment for the upcoming growing season. Paulus, a longtime customer of S.S. Equipment in Quincy, entered the random drawing online to win the top prize.
