The big squeeze went on despite the closure of the federal properties last weekend at Stehekin.
Apples from the Buckner orchard were picked earlier in the week and brought to the Stehekin school, where more than a hundred of us gathered to celebrate the fifth annual juice-making party.
Closure of the landing kept some folks away, but we were guests of Jack and Barbara Stevens of Manson, longtime residents of the valley. The function was run by Herb Sargo, who heads the Buckner Ranch foundation that supports the historic ranch filled with common Delicious trees.
It is the only orchard of its kind. Sargo is the son of the late Irene Sargo, older sister of the two Buckner sisters who attended the party, Hobbie Morehead and Bucky Gans. The school was a perfect substitute for the orchard, and we were entertained by eight local musicians on a lovely Saturday afternoon.
