Merton Lee “Teen” Johnson

January 9, 1924 ~ October 8, 2013

Merton Lee “Teen” Johnson passed away at home in Leavenworth, WA on October 8, 2013. Teen was born January 29, 1924 in Roy, WA to Frank and Eva Johnson. He graduated from Clover Park High School in Tacoma in 1942 and soon after, joined the U.S. Navy Seabees. During his service, he was sent to the Butte School of Mines in Montana to study mining engineering and it was in Butte that he met Shirley White. They were married in Yuma, AZ in July 1945. After the war ended, Teen and his older brother, Forrest Johnson, started a contract logging business together (Forteen Log) in 1952. They first logged in the Willapa-Grays Harbor area and lived in Raymond and Aberdeen. In 1960, they moved their operations to central Washington and both families moved to Ellensburg. During this time, Teen took up skiing and golf. He also joined the Singing Hills Barbershop Chorus and sang lead in a quartet. He and Shirley moved to Leavenworth in 1990, where he continued to enjoy golf, skiing, and singing, into his early 80’s. After retiring from those hobbies, he enjoyed many hours with his good friends at Kristall’s for Friday night dinners and The Old Post Office Tavern for Sunday lunches. Shirley died in 2011 after 66 years of marriage to Teen.

He is survived by four children, Margaret Borgens of Ferndale, Linda Johnson of Seattle, Frank Johnson of Ellensburg, and Kathy Hearn (Thomas Hearn) of Coeur d’Alene; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

A Luncheon to Celebrate Teen’s Life will be held at Wild Huckleberry at the Leavenworth Golf Club, 9101 Icicle Road, on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 p.m. All friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations to Leavenworth’s Community Cupboard, 219 14th Street, Leavenworth, WA 98826 would be appreciated.
