OMAK — Hearts Gathered (HG) will teach Salish language classes on Tuesdays, starting at 6 p.m. Oct. 22, at the Waterfalls School on the St. Mary’s Mission campus near Omak. In Salish, the name of the school is skwant s nm am åyatn, and is named for the nearby Omak Falls.
Nslxcin is the language spoken at the school. It is an interior Salishan dialect which is spoken by Okanogan, Lakes, San Poil, Nespelem, Methow and Colville people.
Now in its fourth year, Waterfall School has 17 students in preschool through second grade.
Classes are open to all community members. HG especially hopes that the parents of Waterfall School students attend the classes so that families will speak Salish in their homes. For more information, contact Melissa Campobasso, Hearts Gathered executive director at 422-5653.
