Don Lee Matthiesen

March 13, 1947 ~ October 13, 2013

Don Matthiesen, a longtime resident of Forest Grove/Portland, OR, passed away due to a sudden illness at the age of 66 on Sunday, October 13, 2013. Don was born in Phoenix, AZ on March 13, 1947 and was the son of Laverne and Anne (Jolley) Matthiesen of Mansfield. He was raised on the family homestead, where he learned at an early age to drive both the truck and the combine during harvest. Many hours were spent walking the wheat fields with friends pulling out the rye (not his favorite job!!). Don graduated in 1965 from Mansfield High School, where he excelled in all team sports and was active in student government. After graduation, Don worked in sales and later in construction. He especially enjoyed remodeling homes in the Portland area. In November of 2005, Don sustained a debilitating fall from a ladder, resulting in serious health issues. Don had a great interest in aviation and was an avid reader of novels and history books, always keeping his mind active. He was a great cook and enjoyed helping to prepare Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners that fed many. He was a likeable kind of guy, a gentle man with a kind heart, who would do anything to help another in need.

Don is survived by his son, Donnie Matthiesen; grandson, Austin of Kirkland; his sister, Penny Nichols (John) of Spokane; his niece, Angi Tomson (Justin), and her daughters, Vanessa and Natasha Kaufman of Spokane; a second “mom”, Mary Eidson of Mansfield; and “sisters”, Janet Eidson Lee of Wenatchee and Carol Eidson Gruber of Elwood, NE.

At the request of Don, no services will be held. If desired, memorials may be made to the Mansfield Dollars for Scholars P.O. Box 642 or the Mansfield Museum and Historical Society, P.O. Box 274. Both are Mansfield, WA 98830.
