Wastes removed from another Hanford tank

RICHLAND — Hanford workers have completed the removal of radioactive waste from another of the site’s single-walled storage tanks.

The U.S. Department of Energy said Thursday that the waste was transferred to a newer double-walled tank that is considered less likely to leak.The wastes are left over from the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons at Hanford.

There are 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical wastes stored in Hanford’s 177 underground tanks. Some of the tanks have leaked.
