WENATCHEE — A Chelan man was convicted at trial Monday of first-degree child molestation, but acquitted of related child sex charges.
The jury returned its verdicts against James C. Austin, 34, after about three hours of deliberation. Austin was charged with molesting a preteen about five times between September 2012 and late January.
Chelan County sheriff’s deputies arrested Austin Jan. 24 after the victim reported the abuse to family members. He entered a not-guilty plea at arraignment; his trial opened Oct. 22.
Austin faces sentencing Dec. 16, with a possible sentence range of 51 to 68 months in prison. He has no prior felony convictions in Washington.
