YAKIMA — Wenatchee cross country coach Susan Valdez didn’t realize it until later, but the Panthers girls narrowly clinched a state berth Thursday with a second-place team finish.

Wenatchee and Eastmont had been neck-and-neck all season long, trading positions with one another, but the Panthers did just enough to advance. They finished second with a team score of 53; Eastmont was third with a score of 54. It is the first time in school history the girls and boys teams will compete at state.
