If you ever wondered how the Middle East got in such a mess today, I recommend a new book.
It is “Lawrence In Arabia” by Scott Anderson, with the subtitle “War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East.”
Anderson tells the story of T.E. Lawrence along with a number of other adventurers, a German officer, a Jewish scientist and advocate of a Zionist state, an American intelligence agent on the payroll of Standard Oil.
They were all involved as the Arab tribes revolted against Turkish rule, helped by Lawrence, who was working against his own country’s imperial ambitions in the region.
Despite the success of the Arab tribes, the British and French divvied up the former Ottoman territory for themselves, along with giving the Zionists legality.
Lawrence finally leaves, his dreams vanished, though heralded around the world for his accomplishments with the Arabs
