LEAVENWORTH — An extra section of the Wenatchee River is open to anglers going after hatchery summer chinook, thanks to heavy rates of returning fish.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife on Friday opened the river from the Highway 2 bridge in Leavenworth upstream to the Icicle River Road bridge, effective Saturday through Sept. 30.
Visitors fishing on this stretch can take both adult and jack adipose-fin clipped summer chinook salmon through the end date, up to a daily limit of four fish. Only two of the four may be adults.
The department made the decision after more fish returned than were needed for spawning recovery programs. Fishing from boats remains prohibited on the newly opened river section.
