MOUNT VERNON — The Wenatchee Valley College men’s and women’s soccer squads lost contests to host Skagit Valley on Wednesday.
The Knights men lost to Skagit Valley 2-1. The Cardinals tallied two first-half goals, but the Knights (1-2-1) seized momentum in the second half, and scored on Williams Pineda penalty kick in the 76th minute to close to within one goal.
“We played amazing today. We had a little bit of a letdown in the first half and worked our way back,” said WVC coach Garrett Brown. “ We pounded their net in the second half; we took about 15 shots in the last 10 minutes. (Skagit Valley) is probably one of the best teams in the division that we’re playing, and we held our own. That’s all that matters to me.”
The Knights women lost by a 1-0 score.
Darrien Dolquist tallied the game’s only goal for Skagit Valley in the 23rd minute.
“We pretty much dominated the whole game, but we couldn’t get one into the net,” said WVC (0-3-0) coach Yanet Candido. “They got a garbage goal, and it held up. The ball was on their side of the field 75 percent of the game, but we couldn’t get one in.”
Both WVC squads will play host to Whatcom on Saturday.
