I want to know
One really has to ask why are these big, out-of-state corporations like Bayer, Dupont, Dow and Monsanto dumping money into fighting against labeling genetically modified food (Initiative 522)? Cost? Don’t most foods already have labels so basically editing and adding some type?
No on I-522 states, “These Washington-only regulations would unfairly hurt Washington farmers, food producers and grocers.” How? By asking them to report what it is they use or do? Would this force the big corporate farms to move out of Washington? Would this force farmers to question whether the cheapest process is actually the best?
This initiative is NOT taking a position on whether genetically engineered foods are good or bad. It would not ban genetically engineered food, just label it so as a consumer, I can decide what my family eats.
What is it that they do not want us to know? As a mother, I want to know.
After studying the text of Initiative 522 I was surprised that it is simply not as it seems, but a costly and misleading food labeling measure that will be on the November statewide ballot.
The worst part of it is it would authorize a new class of bounty hunter lawsuits giving trial lawyers — or any citizen — a special new right to sue farmers, grocers and other Washington businesses over the wording on food labels without any discourse.
I-522 would hurt Washington farmers and our agricultural economy. It would put farmers and food companies at a competitive disadvantage, forcing them to implement costly new packaging and labeling that do not exist in any other state.
I-522 would create a huge bureaucracy that studies indicate would increase food costs by hundreds of dollars per year.
I-522 is all costs and no benefits. That is why a broad coalition of farmers, businesses, scientists and doctors are opposing this measure.
The American Medical Association states ”There is no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered food.”
Over 30 agricultural groups and hundreds of Washington farmers say no on I-522.
