BLAINE, Minn. — The Wenatchee Wild opened the season Wednesday with a 5-2 win over the Topeka RoadRunners. The game was played in a neutral site at a showcase tournament.
The Wild were stellar in special teams play, denying Topeka on all five power play opportunities and slotting two power play goals of their own.
Both of Wenatchee’s power play goals came in the third period.
Nicklas Balboa scored the team’s first goal of the season off an assist from Justin Plate. Wenatchee took a 2-1 lead in the second period after a score by James Mathias (Mike Coyne assist).
The Wild created several degrees of separation with scores from Troy Loggins, Balboa and Mathias to make it a 5-1 contest with eight minutes left in regulation.
Wenatchee was 2-for-6 on the power play and goalie Mackenzie Sawyer had 29 saves on 31 shots. The Wild continue play at the showcase today against the Minnesota Wilderness.
