He entered the Army in 1946, serving with the occupation forces in Japan. Don received a degree of Bachelor of Business Administration in 1952 from the University of Washington. He worked for the IRS for nine years and for Goodfellow Brothers Construction Company for 27 years, as Comptroller and pilot. Don married Rita Louise Richardson on June 12, 1955. Don loved family, friends, traveling, the outdoors and his community. He enjoyed the view of the Wenatchee Valley from home and loved snorkeling in Maui. He delighted in playing pranks and practical jokes on his friends and receiving them in return. Don and Rita thoroughly enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, Canada, and the Hawaiian Islands, visiting Maui annually since 1974.

Don proudly served his community in numerous ways including the following: Past President of the Wenatchee Lions Club, Mission Ridge, Sportsmen’s Club, Chamber of Commerce and United Way. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for 59 years and served in many capacities. Don was also on the YMCA Board of Trustees and a recipient of the Pioneer Award. He was a longtime member of the Wenatchee Board of Adjustment and Wenatchee Planning Commission. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1961. Don served as Treasurer for the Humane Society and Mobile Meals for many years.
