School nurses care for more than bumps and bruises

WENATCHEE — A bump on the noggin, a scraped knee, a sudden onslaught of flu, daily shots of insulin, occasionally a broken arm: whatever injury, illness or medical condition that might come along, there’s the school nurse ready to relieve the pain.

No, school nurses aren’t quite super heroes. Not even seven of them working for the Wenatchee School District can be everywhere at once to bandage the bruises of more than 7,800 students at 11 schools. Their work load and responsibilities increase every year with earlier detection of illnesses, new remedies and tighter rules about health care.
