Tradition and history have enormous community value. Ideals, mores, loyalties and attitudes are handed from one generation to another. The outlooks and attitudes of the young are shaped by those who precede them.
We frequently botch this job. Bad examples abound. Celebrity culture lifts high the slovenly and vulgar while the noble and good languish, perhaps because they are less interesting or profitable. For the sake of future generations we should choose our heroes carefully, because if we do our jobs, our heroes become their heroes.
