The city of Wenatchee has a $20 surcharge on vehicle registrations within the city limits — an added pop on car tabs. The fee brings in $350,000 a year for street maintenance, and given the financial prospects of the city no one should be upset the City Council seems inclined to extend it when it expires in 2015.
Instinct seems to tell them that, if $20 is good, $40 will be twice as good. The council had an open discussion about the possibility of asking voters to approve up to double the car tab surcharge and seemed to like the idea. City Engineer Gary Owen said the real question is not whether to renew the car tab fee, but how much to raise it. “It’s something I would support,” said Mayor Frank Kuntz.
