Inslee fights the climate battle

Gov. Jay Inslee Tuesday issued his long-awaited executive order to combat climate change by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases by the concerned-but-carbon-spewing people of Washington. It would be slightly unfair to point out the truth, that Inslee’s order will do almost nothing in and of itself to reduce our collective carbon gluttony or spare the atmosphere our excess.

First, the obvious — Washington produces only a micro-speck share of the world’s carbon emissions and therefore any sacrifice we make will be insignificant, inevitably. Second, Inslee proposes little direct action — another task force to study and recommend, state agencies ordered to “work with key utilities” or “promote strategies,” etc. Most proposals will require legislative approval or appropriation to do anything at all, which makes their future automatically dubious.
