The sad history of the McCarthy era, when academics all over our nation were fired for being “soft on communism” has become very personal to Darold Wax, retired history professor.

He just learned the story of why Linus Pauling, the famous scientist, had turned his back on his college, Oregon State University. Wax was chosen by that university to head a committee in 1983 to mend fences with Pauling, which he succeeded in doing.
