Host teams lose on 1st day of Babe Ruth World Series

EPHRATA — Two Columbia Basin squads lost in their opening games at the Babe Ruth 16-18 Year Old World Series, which began Thursday at Johnson-O’Brien Stadium.

The Columbia Basin Desert Dogs opened tournament play with a 4-0 loss to Klamath Falls (Ore.), then the Columbia Basin River Dogs fell to San Gabriel Valley (Calif.) 7-2.

The Desert Dogs were held to five hits by Klamath Falls pitcher Jesse Hilyard, who struck out seven batters.
