Supreme Court sides with defendant in orchard theft conviction

OLYMPIA — A Manson man convicted of stealing orchard equipment deserves a new trial to argue he was framed as part of a family feud, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

Edwin Troy Hawkins, 48, sought a retrial after his 2009 Douglas County conviction for stealing two orchard tractors, saying he’d found new evidence pointing to a frame-up. Superior Court Judge John Hotchkiss agreed, but prosecutors appealed and in 2011 the state Court of Appeals said the new trial was not warranted.
