Century-old courthouse tree may survive lightning strike damage

WATERVILLE — A large Douglas fir tree next to the Douglas County Courthouse has a good chance of surviving a lightning strike Wednesday night, officials say.

The top of 110-foot tall tree was struck by lightning, taking out about a 3-inch wide slice of bark and wood from the top of the tree to the bottom.

It’s the tallest tree on one side of the courthouse, and is about 100 years old, said Douglas County Administrator Jim Barker.
