The United States Postal Service is seeking public comment on the pending move of the Wenatchee Post Office, from the marbled halls of the Federal Building, to the humble former Royal Palace Restaurant at 1060 Maple.
We have no objection. With remodeling and a short period of adjustment, we are sure Wenatchee will soon forget its post office occupies what once was a Chinese restaurant. We are all for efficiency. With mail sorting and trucking duties moved to the Postal Service facility at Olds Station, there is no reason to continue shelling out $500,000 a year in rent for far too much space in the Federal Building on Yakima Street. Tradition in this case has no meaning. There is no longer a need for the Postal Service to impress us with architectural grandeur. The Federal Building space is ridiculously large for Postal Service retail operations, like mailing letters and packages, selling stamps and renting post office boxes. The ex-Royal Palace will be perfectly adequate and conveniently located.
