H. Leslie “Les” Carpenter

H. Leslie “Les” Carpenter passed away quietly at home on Saturday, August 16, 2014, in the presence of family and caregivers. He was born on July 30, 1918, to Harry S. and Mary N. Carpenter at Wenatchee, WA. Les attended school in Chelan, WA, graduating Chelan High School in 1937. He attended technical school in aircraft construction in Long Beach, CA, where he then worked for North American Aviation Inc., building P-51 Mustangs and B-25 Bombers throughout the War. Following the War, he returned to the Chelan Valley and married Helen Faris Brown in 1947, and they continued to operate apple orchards until her death in 1971. He served many years as a Director and President of the boards of Blue Chelan Inc. and Growers Credit Inc. He also was a member of the Chelan County Sheriff’s Posse and involved in numerous search and rescue operations. He was an active member of the Manson Outlaws Saddle Club and the Lake Chelan Ski Club. He married Louise Jensen Croy in 1973, and they continued to operate orchards, expanding to 65 acres. They were avid square dancers and loved traveling the Western States in their motorhome.
He was preceded in death by wife, Helen; daughter, Lucinda; son, Harold; and wife, Louise. He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Crinklaw; son, Keith Carpenter and wife, Adrienne; step-daughter, Joanne Vervaeke; step-son, Robert “Butch” Croy and wife, Brenda; sister, Helen Collins; sister-in-law, Marcelle Beckley Carpenter; grandchildren, Ron and Terri Coffell, Randy and Lori Coffell, and Ryan and Kristin Coffell, Amy and John (Coffell) Harmon, Brock and Tanya Gibson, Laura and Jeff (Vervaeke) Robinson, John and Michelle Vervaeke, and Corbin and Sarah Croy; great-grandchildren, Emily and Seth (Coffell) Small, Rysom Coffell, Taylor, Kelsie, and Cassidy Coffell, Amanda and Aleera Harmon, Aubriana Ray Coffell, Adam Love, Bret and Kristen Gibson, and Mae Robinson; and great-great-granddaughter, Georgia Ann Small.
The family wishes to especially thank caregivers, Bob and Kathy Eier, who have provided loving care and comfort to Les, allowing him to live his final years and days comfortably in his own home.
